For 2026, several high-profile traffic officer learnerships and trainee programs have been announced across South Africa. These programs are typically aimed at unemployed youth and provide a monthly stipend along with a formal qualification in road traffic law enforcement.

Limpopo Provincial Vacancies Limpopo Dept of Transport Various (2026) Check Circular No. 25 of 2025/26 for specific law enforcement intakes.

General Requirements

While each province or municipality may have slight variations, the standard entry requirements established by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) are:

  • Age: Between 18 and 35 years old.

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or equivalent.

  • Driver’s License: A valid Code B manual driver’s license (minimum).

  • Criminal Record: You must have a clean criminal record (fingerprint checks are mandatory).

  • Health & Fitness: You must be medically and physically fit to undergo strenuous training.

  • Tattoos: Most departments strictly prohibit visible tattoos when wearing a short-sleeved uniform.

The Selection Process

Becoming a traffic officer is highly competitive. Shortlisted candidates usually undergo a rigorous “selection week” which includes:

  1. Physical Fitness Test: Expect push-ups, sit-ups, shuttle runs (bleep test), and sometimes a 2.1m wall climb or a swim test.

  2. Written Assessment: To test literacy, numeracy, and basic road rule knowledge.

  3. Driving Assessment: To ensure you can competently operate a manual vehicle.

  4. Medical & Drug Testing: A full medical exam including psychological evaluations and drug screening.

Where to Apply & Stay Updated

  • Western Cape: Visit the Western Cape Government Jobs portal.

  • Gauteng: Monitor the Gauteng Treasury or individual Metro websites (JMPD, EMPD).

  • RTMC: Check the Road Traffic Management Corporation website for national trainee intake announcements.

Important Warning: Never pay anyone to “secure” a spot in a learnership. Official government programs will never ask for a recruitment fee or “deposit” for uniforms or training. All applications should be submitted through official provincial or municipal channels.
